VC Headlines Keep Coming - What You Need to Know & Pods for Travel

So. Much. Action! VC headlines can’t stop won’t stop right now - so much for the summer slowdown! In the past week, we’ve seen some big news w/ big implications for VCs and LPs investing in some of the most notable technology sectors.

Today, we’ll surface the key headlines, resources, and hot takes that impact your VC or LP investing strategy. We’ve also included some of our favorite recent pods for upcoming summer travel. Enjoy!

  1. Inflation rose at a 4% annual rate in May, the lowest in 2 years (CNBC). this is big news for macro, public markets, and ultimately VC & LP portfolios.

  2. Web3 in SaaS Clothing (Tomasz Tunguz). In the mid-2010s, every web1 company became a web2 company. This time it’s different. Many web3 companies will become web2 companies, too.

  3. The AI API : The Twilio Moment for Machine Learning (Tomasz Tunguz). 90% of startups have plans or have released an AI feature, 54% of those features will launch in 2023, but only 30% of companies are hiring new people to do it.

  4. VC Giant Sequoia Spins Off China and India Units (Dealbook). The Silicon Valley firm said the split would simplify its business, amid rising tensions between the US and China over technology investment and development.

  5. Expanding to the UK (Chris Dixon @ a16z). The UK also has deep pools of talent, world-leading academic institutions, and a strong entrepreneurial culture. It is home to more “unicorns” than Germany, France, and Sweden combined.

  6. All-In Podcast E132: SEC goes after crypto giants (7:52), Sequoia splits (26:08), LIV/PGA (41:55), Messi's deal + LIVE Q&A, All-In Podcast

  7. Pod: 9 common mistakes Limited Partners can easily avoid when investing in venture funds (Samir Kaji at Venture Unlocked). investing cyclically, overrating track records, treating venture as an index, etc…

  8. Law of VC: Everyone in VC is an Accredited Investor. The U.S. House passed a bill with strong bipartisan support (383-18 vote) allowing potential investors to qualify as accredited investors through a test. Many people thought this was a good idea. Others weren’t so sure. Who’s right?!

  9. Do Valuations Matter? (Signature Block). There is a lot of talk about valuations. Growth valuations have corrected following public markets, and the pressure is moving into the earlier stages. And venture fund managers are adapting.

  10. Optimism reigns supreme among VCs at SuperVenture (Pitchbook). The sun was shining in Berlin as this year's SuperVenture conference got underway, and the mood among attendees was no less bright, despite the global downturn in VC dealmaking. Adams Street Partners' Ross Morrison kicked off the conference, which drew over 800 participants, stressing that innovation is constant and the "huge amount of innovation going on within venture capital makes it such an attractive asset class."
