VC Platform (Founder Experience) & Hiring Insights

In our past posts , we’ve covered a lot of ground, mostly related to fund finances, operations, and driving fund returns via models, budgets, technology, and processes. That’s good stuff but it’s definitely not everything!

What we haven’t talked enough about is the portfolio companies and people that make all of that possible.

Luckily, my Chapter One colleagues Maria Tangarova and Greg Clayman are sharing some awesome tips and tactics in their Founder Experience Blog, which I highly recommend checking out! Here are some of my favorite insights so far:

The VC Platform Global Summit is the largest and most diverse gathering of platform professionals in the venture capital industry each year. In April, they hosted their 6th annual summit in New York City that included 400+ individuals from 300+ VC firms. Check out the schedule and speaker list to learn more about some key VC topics, including platform, marketing & communication, talent, operations, community, business development, and investor relations.

Be Opportunistic

“We’re always adding top talent to our ecosystem (Chapter One Talent Network) and helping founders think through what they’re going to need in 3, 6, 12 months while assisting them with building a stronger employer brand to attract this opportunistic talent.”

“I continually hammer home the importance of being opportunistic - both to portfolio companies and to candidates during their job search. I’ve honestly placed more people into companies over the last five years for roles that haven’t had an advertised job than I have for “open roles.”

Write a Great Job Description

https://founderexperience.beehiiv.com/p/job-descriptions

“In a previous post around how we strategically approach early-stage hiring, we discussed several different ways we partner with our portfolio companies to take recruiting lift off their shoulders. Writing and refining job descriptions is a frequent ask from our founders and, oftentimes, seen as a sort of a necessary evil.”

“What are some of the differences between a “good” job description and a “great” job description? I’ve outlined it in the table below. You can see from the Whatnot description listed above where they go one step beyond and move from ‘good’ to ‘great’:”

That’s all for today folks! Thanks for your support and spreading the word! Share this on Twitter or LinkedIn to help grow “the crew!”
