The End of VC Summer

It’s the end of VC summer! Labor Day Weekend is coming up before the fall sprint to Thanksgiving begins - buckle up! For this edition, we thought we’d share some top reads as we sit the foundation for fall. Enjoy!

β€œI’ve always felt more comfortable trusting data that reflects people putting real money on their beliefs, opinions, and analyses β€” rather than the polls.”

Elizabeth Yin just dropped a link to a cap table model on X/com: https://lnkd.in/gWQx_hr9π—¦π—”π—™π—˜ π—–π—Όπ—»π˜ƒπ—²π—Ώπ˜€π—Άπ—Όπ—» π—ͺπ—Όπ—Ώπ—Έπ˜€π—΅π—²π—²π˜ 𝗔𝗽𝗽This app is 100% client-side, allowing you to quickly model various cap table scenarios without saving data on a server. The private equity realm has been pretty active so far in 2024, serving as a powerful β€œalternative” source of liquidity for technology startups and scale-ups in search of an exit. PE has also been busy in the public markets, with some big deals going down to transform underperforming companies with strong growth prospects. According to PitchBook, there were 136 take-private deals led by private equity firms in 2023, up 15% on the previous year.

VCs are increasingly buying shares of late-stage startups on the secondary market as they try to get pieces of the hottest ones β€” especially AI companies. But they are also increasingly doing so through financial instruments called special purpose vehicles (SVPs). Some of those SPVs are becoming such hot commodities that they are commanding premium prices.

I’ve worked as an LP, I’ve run a syndicate, I built a private community for VCs, and I cut my teeth as a junior VC working for two different funds.

That’s all for today folks! Thanks for your support and spreading the word! Share this on Twitter or LinkedIn to help grow β€œthe crew!”
