Top Reads of Recent History, VC CFO Style

Happy Tuesday folks! We got some amazing feedback last week so wanted to start you off (again) with some of our top reads of recent history, VC CFO style:

From Molly: ā€œLast week was a big week for LA VC as the Upfront Summit went out with a bang.. and a drone show. To keep up with the VIP attendees (aka LPs) flying in for the event, additional LA-based venture firms like Chapter One and others capitalized on the moment to host their firmsā€™ Summits as well. Personally, Iā€™d argue we make a LA Summit every quarter, because why not? LA is the new epicenter of US tech & VC funding. ā€œ

As for the Upfront recap.. weā€™re still compiling our notes and photos, but American Dynamism, hardtech + defense tech, Melinda French Gates, & celebrities shined bright. In the meantime, check out this excellent summary of the Summit from Dot.LA.

  • What is their edge? How are they different from every other manager you have looked at?

  • Is this person / team good enough that we want them to be an extension of our team? If the answer is ā€œnoā€, donā€™t invest.

  • Is this person likable? The earlier you invest, the more you rely on collaboration. So being unlikable and early-stage investing do not go hand-in-hand.

  • Do they have a history of co-investing with LPs? Or do they keep LPs in the dark about who their breakout companies are?

  • What is their portfolio construction? More concentration = higher risk / reward.
