Top Posts of 2024 (So Far) & Takeaways

Is it too early to do top posts of 2024 so far? Of course not! We do this because our readers love having our top posts and takeaways all in one place. It helps them revisit common issues and allows us to expand on some questions / feedback we received since posting! Here we go!

  1. #124 VC Market Data, Predictions in Charts: In 2023, exits were down (only $61.5 billion vs. $75 billion in 2013), valuations down big (except for seed), and big deals down (269 in 2023 vs. 800+ in 2021). Predictions for 2024: a “soft landing” is likely, we are moving into the application era of AI, VC investing / fund formation flat, and many more takes!

  2. #123 Q4 Valuations + Real Policy Examples (Download): PE & VC firms are required to value their portfolio of investments quarterly. Those values are published on a schedule of investments (SOI) that is shared with investors and establishes the value of the PE/VC investment fund. At year-end, they review these valuations in detail with their auditors, who are required to sign-off on the numbers. We have real examples you can download here!

  3. #126 What is M.A.N.G.? Is it Taking Over VC?: What is MANG? MANG = Microsoft Amazon Nvidia Google. Why does this matter to the world of VC? From Agrawal: “These companies make up the newest group of prolific venture capitalists in data and AI: Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, and Nvidia. Total capital raised in their 2023 deals was $25B+, which is ~8% of the total venture capital raised in North America.”

  4. #129 Real VC Compensation Data & Secrets: “How much do I pay myself? What about a new partner / principal / associate at my VC firm?” This is a question I’ve discussed with hundreds of GPs and CFOs / Finance Pros as they’ve grown their firm. Find all the insights here!
