Real VC Compensation Data & Secrets

“How much do I pay myself? What about a new partner / principal / associate at my VC firm?” This is a question I’ve discussed with hundreds of GPs and CFOs / Finance Pros as they’ve grown their firm. For big corporates, the data is widely available. For VC, the answer is more opaque and usually “it depends.”

⬛ VC Salary Data and Trends for 2023 (Published 01-29-2024). The 2023 Venture Capital Salary Survey by Venture5 Media & John Gannon was just released yesterday - it provides a wealth of key insights into the cash compensation, salary, bonus and comp trends in the VC industry. Participants: 600+ VC professionals.Salary Ranges by VC Role (plus average & year-over-year % change):• Analysts and Senior Analysts: $50,000 to $150,000; Avg: $97K (+6%)• Associates: $60,000 to $243,000; Avg: $127K (-7%)• Senior Associates: $60,000 to $360,000; Avg: $163K (+6%)• VPs/Principals: $135,000 - $500,000; Avg: $195K (+7%)• Partners: $0 to $825,000; Avg: $292K (-1%)• Platform Roles: $90,000 to $300,000; Avg: $176K (0%)

Comparison Between Corporate & Traditional VC

• At the Analyst, Associate, Senior Associate, and VP/Principal levels, corporate VC professionals reported earning similar or sometimes even more total cash compensation (salary + bonus) compared to their traditional VC counterparts.• At the Partner level, traditional VCs earned more in both total cash compensation and carry.• Influence of Firm Size and Stage: Compensation tended to be higher in firms with larger assets under management (AUM), particularly noticeable in Late Stage & Growth Equity and Stage Agnostic Firms.
